Well, obviously, Antoine Dodson is a huge UFC fan, homeboy

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- In UFC president Dana White's latest video blog for UFC 123, we learn that Antoine Dodson, of "The Bed Intruder Song" fame, is a big Quinton "Rampage" Jackson fan. It's worth watching the whole thing -- the language is NSFW -- but the first minute is golden.

Amazing. Not only that, but UFC lightweight Kenny Florian and color commentator Joe Rogan are huge Dodson fans, then again, who isn't? Dodson is expected to go to the fights at the Palace of Auburn Hills on Saturday night to cheer on Rampage. He yelled like crazy for Jackson during Friday's weigh-ins.

Run and tell that, homeboy.

Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Sobral is not quite as expected

Just a week ago, Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Sobral was set with Alistair Overeem's brother's Strikeforce debut against Antonio Silva, Herschel Walker's second MMA fight, and a showcase for local favorite Jesse Finney.

Scrap that. Now, the card has a completely different look. Valentijn Overeem, Walker and Finney have all been scratched from the card because of injury.

Now, Mike Kyle has stepped in to face Silva, so one fight is salvaged, but the card has a vastly different look than it did just one week ago.

Brian Foster taps out Matt Brown at UFC 123

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Brian Foster won a welterweight battle over Matt Brown via submission at UFC 123 in suburban Detroit on Saturday.

Foster started quickly with a takedown. He gave up position for a moment until, then Foster reversed position and took Brown's back. Foster took over the round with a series of unanswered strikes. As Foster worked on the back, he gave up an arm, and it looked like Brown was going to be able to finish the fight with a submission, but Foster methodically and patiently worked out near the end of the round.

The two exchanged heated words between rounds, leading into the second round that started with Foster taking a low blow from Brown. Foster wowed the crowd by catching a kick and using it to deposit Brown on his back. Foster then worked his arms around Brown for a guillotine, forcing Brown to tap at 2:11 in the second.

This is Foster's second win in a row, making the H.I.T Squad fighter 17-5. Brown, an alumnus of "The Ultimate Fighter," is now 13-10.

Forrest Griffin's visit didn't help Michigan's cause today

The UFC is Detroit tonight so the UFC video crew decided to pay a visit to a Michigan football practice as the Wolverines prepped for their game against Wisconsin. The best guy to bring out to Ann Arbor was none other than Forrest Griffin. A former high school football player, Griffin fights with a gridiron mentality.

Unfortunately, his presence didn't fire up the troops enough. Michigan got bombed today 48-28 by the Badgers. There wasn't much tackling done by the boys in blue.

Rich Rodriguez gave Griffin a Michigan jersey with his old high school number 67 on it. If Griffin were a little younger, the 6-foot-3, 240-pounder could've suited up at defensive end for the Wolverines.

We don't know if Griffin was any good at football, but it's clear he liked to hit. Check out this classic video of Griffin headbutting a helmet-wearing teammate without his helmet on.

Former NBA star Glen Rice is an MMA promoter

Everyone wants a piece of the MMA game. That includes a former hoops star who made $66.7 million during his time in the NBA. Glen Rice is an MMA convert and he's got a card coming up Thursday night in South Florida.

"They're conditioned athletes. Their workouts are extremely difficult," Rice said. "Me as being an ex-professional basketball player, we worked hard but we didn't work as hard as these guys do."

Rice's G-Force promotions has also booked Trick Daddy to perform at the Bank United Center. The card has a mix of male and female fights. Rice and fighters Jessica Aguilar and Mike Vallejo appeared on WQAM in Miami to push Bad Blood 4

Aguilar, a 2010 Bellator featherweight tournament semifinalist, is on the card. She talked about her passion for fighting and said Mexican pride fuels her when she's getting battered. WQAM host Joe Rose got into the great history of Mexican fighters.

"But don't compare me to the Mexican who fought this weekend," Aguilar said referencing Antonio Margarito. "I don't like to talk. I like to do. I guess I think he deserved it for talking so bad."

Margarito suffered a unanimous-decision defeat at the hands of Manny Pacquiao. By the end of the fight, Margarito's eyes were closed and he had suffered a broken orbital bone. Aguilar said she doesn't believe Margarito's excuses about his illegal hand wrap before the Shane Mosley fight.

The main event of Bad Blood 4 features Dhafir Harris. In Florida, "Da Da 5000" is being talked about as Kimbo Slice 2.0.

A hot ticket in Detroit, fans are focused on 'Rampage'

Detroit is going through some rough times. The struggling economy has killed the city. Housing values are at an all-time low and unemployment has skyrocketed. It might be why the Detroit-area fans are fired up to see Quinton Jackson. He escaped the rough streets of Memphis to become one of mixed martial arts' biggest stars.

Jackson faces Lyoto Machida tonight in the Octagon in the main event  at UFC 123. The 32-year-old told the Detroit Free Press that fighting has saved him from a life behind bars.

"Wrestling and the UFC have changed my life. The toughest people in the world -- the street punks who think they're tough, anyway -- are dead or in prison," Jackson said. "If you are in prison, that's the same as being dead, I think. This sport saved me. I could have been dead. I've been shot at a few times."

At 32 years old, Jackson (30-8, 5-2 UFC) is still a young guy but the fight marks a crossroad for his career. Plenty of critics are questioning Jackson's ability to get back to the well-rounded ways of his PRIDE days. The powerful brawler has fallen in love with his hands. If you only approach him from one angle, Machida (16-1, 8-1 UFC) is a tough assignment. He needs to mix things up, but in the end, it will be Rampage's power punching that can win him the fight. It's what has fans scurrying for tickets.

According to SeatGeek, even with the money struggles in the Motor City, fans are hot and heavy over UFC 123.

Key to the Jets victory? UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar

The New York Jets had a rough game on Sunday. Heading into the fourth quarter, they led the Houston Texans 20-7, but they then gave up 20 fourth quarter points, and were losing with just seconds left in the game. Then QB Mark Sanchez hit Santonio Holmes for a touchdown with 10 seconds on the clock, giving the Jets the win. That come from behind victory helped solidify the Jets spot atop the AFC East.

Just who inspired that come from behind victory? Frankie Edgar, the UFC lightweight champ. Jets coach Rex Ryan brought in Edgar to speak to his player the night before the game, and Edgar talked to the team about mental toughness.

According to Sanchez, it made a difference. Via press release:

Talk about a guy who is mentally tough and physically tough. He came in and spoke to the team last night. It was a perfect time. He talked about never giving up, being counted out, playing until the end; fighting and believing in yourself and your team and the people around you.

Edgar, a native New Jerseyan and a former wrestling coach at Rutgers University, enjoyed the game from the front row of the New Meadowlands. His next challenge is Gray Maynard, who Edgar will fight on Jan. 1 at UFC 125.

Okami gets Silva or Belfort; Marquardt whiffs on earning second title shot

Nate Marquardt is one of the best middleweights in the world but he may never get another shot UFC 185-pound title. Each time he's one step away from a championship match, Marquardt falls short. It happened again today at UFC 122 against Yushin Okami. The Japanese grappler is handful for anyone and now that's added decent striking to his arsenal, he was an unsolvable riddle for American. Okami pulled the upset with a unanimous decision win, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28, and earned himself a title shot some time in 2011.

Marquardt (30-10-2, 8-4 UFC) was in line for a title shot back at UFC 109. All he needed was a victory over Chael Sonnen. Sonnen dominated that fight with his wrestling and eventually faced Anderson Silva at UFC 117.

Okami didn't dominate the grappling to that degree but he did get the best of the work on the ground in the opening two rounds. In the third, Marquardt looked a little tired and couldn't figure out how to get inside to land punches. The taller Okami used his jab well and landed several nice straight lefts. That final stanza locked up the victory for Okami. He may not be the most exciting fighter in the division but he's now 10-2 in the UFC.

Marquardt has to go back to the drawing board knowing that he may be a regular in the top five but might not possess the game to win against the top fighters in the division. He lost to Silva at UFC 73 and said repeatedly that he's a different fighter now. Unfortunately, these failings in big fights are becoming his legacy.

Ask Nicolas Mller: The Answers

You may remember our Nicolas Müller interview in Issue #8.1, and the subsequent Ask Nico contest. Well, Nico's a busy dude launching his new Atreebutes clothing line and all, but he found time to answer your questions. We appreciate everyone's questions, but we had to pick a winner. So, without further adieu, Chuck will be receiving a prize package from Burton Snowboards, including a backpack, t-shirt and hat, and an iFreq hat and a gun show tank top for his question on style, with reference to one of our favorite quotes to ever appear in frequency TSJ from the late Craig Kelly’s interview in Issue #2.2. Chuck, check your email, and read on for Nico's answers.

Style

Craig Kelly once described his freeriding style as a ball rolling down the terrain, naturally following the flow of the hill and spinning off the drops the way it would naturally spin. How do you envision your runs before you drop in? In other words, how would you describe your style?

-          Chuck via frqncy.com

Dear Chuck! I love that description of Craig about his riding style. I would describe my style more like I am skateboarding down the hill while surfing frozen waves. Looking out for transitions, banks and drops to get technical on. Also I get to go bigger and faster opposed to on the concrete plus I can always set a sharp bottom turn.

Beyond the Contest Arena

What up Nico. I always love it when pro snowboarders decide to leave the game of contests and the "spotlight" to achieve more personal goals in snowboarding and in life. In my mind, you are that pioneer. I was curious what your game plan after snowboarding was? And how do you keep yourself stoked on snowboarding during the summer months?

-          Adam via frqncy.com

Dear Adam, thank you for those nice words. After a while in the circus, you may realize that the most important ranking list to be on top is your own. I love snowboarding and every part of it. I had a blast at contests but at the moment I feel like I want to ride into the silence. I have just settled down in Grischa, southeastern Switzerland. When I am at home there’s so much that I want to do. In a while I am gonna go shred with kids, like as a mentor. Which makes me think of being a parent one day… till then, I wanna keep telling my story as a snowboarder though. But I am telling you it will be the simple life.

In the summer it is off my mind a lot, but then after a while I start day-dreaming about it again.

And the next thing you know you are at a premiere of a film broin’ out and the snow is fallin’ again. To keep the stoke I got one word…Skateboarding!

Nicolas, I've always been a huge fan of your riding and was interested to read how you stepped back from the contest venue to focus on freeriding. What do you think the next step will be? How will you keep finding new inspiration when you've ridden so much terrain around the world?

-          Daniel via frqncy.com

Hey Daniel, yeah, so after a good while the whole contest thing changed for me. I wasn’t as hungry anymore and I just didn’t really care anymore. Showing up and people would be more hyped then yourself, I simply had to realize that I needed to step away from it. I had my time on the podium at Air & Style, X-Trail and all those events and all of a sudden I felt like I wanted to make room for the next rippers. And that simply because I wasn’t hungry anymore like when I was new to it. And I moved on and found more time to just snowboard, more time to find inspiration on the mountain. And we all know it, once we get out there…there’s infinite potential. All you need is to free your mind.

Advice for Beginners

Hey Nico. What is your best advice to a novice snowboarder who is absolutely hooked?

-          Jonathan via frqncy.com

Yo Jonathan, welcome to planet snowboard hehe…that’s easy, step on it as much as you can. Try it all in every direction, go with what gives you the most pleasure and take those turns on the road of progression. And you’ll never have to ask for directions anymore. You know it!

I was wondering if you have ever taught a snowboard lesson? Either to friends or professionally. If you were to teach, what would be the three things you would say?
-          Marcello via frqncy.com

Hey Marcello, yes I think I did. Not professionally, but for friends for sure. If it’s your first day I would have to say a bunch of things like how to post up and to react. But I would have to see how the first attempts looked. And if somebody can already ride a bit it’s easy. I’d say the three words: let’s go riding. That’s how I learned as well, by observing and studying others; learning by doing and going riding with advanced shredders.

Breathe

What do you enjoy most about your Breathe Foundation? Where do you see the foundation going in the future? Are you planning to do conservation in the Northern Hemisphere? How do you choose projects? Where do you feel the need for conservation is the most in the world? Thank you for your time. I find your foundation very proactive and inspiring; a great way to conserve the environment and connect the community through environment, education and fun.

-          Phillipe via frqncy.com

Hey Phillipe, the thing I enjoy most about the Breathe Foundation is that it is about something bigger then a sport, an economic niche or human pleasure. I see the foundation as a platform for events and good information to elevate higher consciousness. As of now I am very busy being a pro snowboarder so I can only support our general manager Drew Stevenson, former TTR CEO and founder of Method Mag, however I can. The focus is on connecting and confronting western people with old culture and traditions, sustainable ways of living and purely providing the chance of a moment to just breathe in this hectic world. Thanks a lot and keep spreading the knowledge in your community. I just heard this phrase I want to share with you: “Love is the only emotion that increases intelligence…” I thought that’s pretty cool, right?

Creativity

With such creativity on the snow, do you express yourself in any other art form such as painting, music, or photography?

-          Chau B via email

Ciao Chau B. It is so important to live out creativity right? I love anything that involves a creative aspect of us. For a while snowboarding, skating and other sports were my only expressions of it. There was a time I took a lot of photos on the road. I love photography, but sometimes I’d rather soak up the moment like that. I have recently started to paint and fell in love with it. And now that I have my house I’ve set up turntables and I am stacking up on vinyl. Fredi K now teaches me some techniques on the 1s and 2s! Yeahh.

Another thing that I can spend unlimited time on is working on and around my house. Just makin’ it the way I want to. It feels so good. And last but not least cooking…oh my God there’s so much flavor out there. And it just grows for us…out of pure love.

Thanks to the sun (:

'Rampage' (finally) suffers a definitive loss

There will never be answer to who really won last night's main event at UFC 123. Some favor Quinton "Rampage" Jackson while others liked the Octagon control exhibited by Lyoto Machida. Jackson took a split decision win from the Brazilian. He stated several times that he was lucky to win and even said Machida deserved a rematch.

The good feelings continued until Rampage arrived back home in Los Angeles. That's when he decided to take on his manager Anthony McGann. Jackson got nailed playing bag tag and went for a ride.

Scott Smith Planning for a 'Slugfest' With Paul Daley

Most fighters would prefer to avoid exchanging punches with British striker Paul Daley, but Scott Smith, whose carved a niche for himself with his durability and willingness to engage punches in wars, says he's looking forward to a "slugfest" come Dec. 4 in St. Louis.

"Definitely looking for a standup fight," Smith said Tuesday on a Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu media call. "But this is mixed martial arts and you gotta be prepared for anything, so I'm working on all aspects of my game but I'm definitely planning on this being a slugfest."

Andy Souwer Possibly Herniated Disc Before Loss to Toby Imada

Andy Souwer's first loss in over four years in the Shoot Boxing ring to new-comer Toby Imada may have come with good reason as he revealed post-fight that he carried a possibly severe back injury into Tuesday's S-Cup semi-final bout.

Team Souwer's personal physician is yet to perform a full diagnosis on the three-time S-Cup and two-time K-1 MAX champion but suspects that Souwer suffered a herniated disc in his quarter final KO victory over WMC Welterweight Champion Bovy Sor Audomsorn.

"(I had back pain) in the first round in the first fight. I didn't know what exactly the problem was or what the reason was that I had the pain. I don't want to make excuses but I think it was a big reason why I was not able to fight my own game (against Imada). I'm not saying that I lost because of an injury but I can tell you that I didn't even warm up because of the pain," Souwer revealed in a post fight interview.

Mike Vick probably put a smile on Dana White's face

The man is from Boston but allow Dana White a chance to gloat a bit today. The Patriots fan declared last August that he was also an Eagles fan. White knows that statement might earn him a scowl from an old lady and make several New Englanders throwing snowballs at his house, but the UFC president likes to back the underdog. It was last year, before the NFL season began, White stated he was a backer of Michael Vick.

"I hope Michael Vick wins the Super Bowl, makes $3 billion and is the greatest comeback story in the history of sports, man," White told Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole. "When are they going to stop crucifying this [expletive] guy?"

After spending 19 months in prison on dog fighting charges, Vick has been back in the NFL for 21 games. He's started less than half and put up solid numbers. Last night in a win over the Washington Redskins, he broke through with an all-time performance. Vick passed for 333 yards, ran for 80 and produced six touchdowns.

"I think the guy has taken it on the chin like a man. You haven’t seen him bitch about it. … He walks out of bankruptcy court this morning, because he has to pay creditors back $20 [expletive] million and he walks out smiling and he’s going to play tonight," White said in August of 2009.

A month later in Dallas at UFC 103, White reiterated his stance, telling radio personality "Big" Dick Hunter that he'd never seen anything like the Vick saga (0:25 mark - NSFW).

White's pretty consistent in his support for athletes who get slaughtered by the media. In Dec. of 2009, at the UFC 107 postfight press conference, he donned a Tiger Woods hat saying he was sick of watching the golfer's troubles played out publicly.

Still-evolving Davis ready for pressure at UFC 123

DETROIT -- Before taking on Tim Boetsch at UFC 123, UFC light heavyweight Phil Davis had to face a tough ask. He was in the spotlight at the Palace of Auburn Hills during the Pistons-Lakers game. Davis was given 24 seconds to hit as many free throws as he could. (Watch it here.) For each bucket he hit, $200 was donated to Pistons Care.

By the time he left the court, $1600 was donated. He said he felt more pressure going on the court than he ever has in the Octagon.

"Definitely free throws. Wrestling is what I know, it's what I'm good at. Anything kind of, sort of related to wrestling, I'm good with. Free throws? No," Davis said.

Though he hit eight free throws, he isn't breaking any stereotypes about wrestlers not being able to hoop.

"Let's not wave it off. It can be pushed to the back to the things people say about wrestlers."

Davis was a national champion wrestler for Penn State, and is most comfortable doing that which revolves around wrestling.

"Everything works its way back to wrestling"

"Everything with me works its way back to wrestling. To me, MMA is like wrestling, and I don't know why I've been wrestling for so long and not been punching. Wrestling is so much fun when you can punch people. I don't know why I haven't been doing it."

Davis works with both Alliance MMA in San Diego and American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose. He never wants to get too comfortable as a fighter, so he challenges himself by working with everyone from UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez to bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz. He's learned something from every fighter he's been around.

"I was helped by Jon Fitch and Cain Velasquez, except, most of his tips hurt. I'm always asking for help and they're more than happy to give it to me. Brandon Vera, too, really gave me a sharp kickboxing look," Davis said. "[Cruz] does a bunch of things that blow my mind. When you can move with a guy his speed, and land a few punches, you've got to be in good position and be able to move. He's definitely helped me get my footwork down and be ready to strike."

Davis' striking game is still evolving. He wants to be exciting, but is more focused on winning.

"You can go for a spinning backfist and miss it, or you hit a straight right. I think people will remember the spinning backfist, but if you get knocked out, no one's going to thank you for going for it. There's no style points in MMA. I stick to what I'm good at, and I stick to my game."

His hunger to learn, wrestling pedigree and natural talent make Davis an exciting prospect, but he's not letting it get to his head.

"You can't allow anyone to tell you your worth. That's both positive and negative. If someone tells you that you're the worst in the world, you can't believe that. If someone tells you you're the best in the world, you can't believe that either. You gotta be who you are and know where you're at. I know I get beat up in the gym every day, so it's no mystery. I'm not ready for a title shot."

White calls Marquardt a 'choker' and criticizes camp

Dana White speaks his mind even if it means lashing out at the good guys in the sport. White pulled no punches after watching Nate Marquardt struggle in another pivotal fight.

"He is a choker," White told MMAjunkie at the UFC postfight press conference. "He choked tonight. Listen you couldn't meet a nicer guy than Nate Marquardt. He's a great guy. Nice kid choked tonight."

Marquardt lost his one and only shot at the middleweight title back in 2007. He's admitted many times that he froze up against the champion Anderson Silva at UFC 73.

Back in February, a win over Chael Sonnen would've earned him a much-coveted rematch against the champ. Because of a flawed gameplan, he was dominated by Sonnen. It happened again last night against Yushin Okami. Marquardt never got in a groove. He was outpointed on the feet and couldn't maintain position when the match hit the ground.

What disappointed White even more was Marquardt's measured approach. The fight appeared to be even on the scorecards heading to the final round, but the middleweight contender never went for broke.

"You already blew a title shot once; you're in a fight for the title shot again in the third round, and you're not throwing any punches or kicks? It has nothing to do with pressure," White said. "You're ... professional, and you're going to go after it in the last round to get your title shot."

The UFC president pointed the finger of blame at Marquardt's trainer and cornermen.

"I mean, Nate Marquardt sat here tonight and said that he thought he won the fight. Where the [expletive] is his corner? You go into the last round and you're getting outstruck by a wrestler, and you think you won the fight? And this is consistent with the Greg Jackson camp," said White.

The Jackson camp generally employs a calm, analytical style between rounds. There's no screaming, yelling or desperation. White said that approach has backfired with many of the Jackson fighters.

"Marquardt is such a talented guy, and what I'm seeing is stuff from the Greg Jackson camp," White said. "This camp continuously – when these guys fight, their corner is either telling them they're ahead or they're winning."

The disappointment of the loss can probably be erased pretty quickly with a couple of wins. Marquardt is just 31 years old and Silva is far from a lock to hold onto the title in 2011. Marquardt is also fortunate because there aren't a ton of hot shot prospects nipping at his heels that could knock him from the top five in the UFC's 185 class.

Bader Believes Flashy Jones May Tone Down Creative Style for UFC 126 Clash

Ryan Bader walked into the UFC with big hopes of his own to go with the expectations of others who saw a diamond in the rough. The former collegiate wrestling All-American has steadily improved and risen up the UFC light-heavyweight depth chart, first winning The Ultimate Fighter's season eight, before embarking on an octagon career that's seen him go 5-0, with big wins over Keith Jardine, and most recently, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

That victory put him on a collision course with another rising star, Jon Jones. The two will meet at UFC 126 in February 2011, and because the two are likely to be in the championship picture for years to come, it seems to be the type of matchup that at best might ignite a longtime rivalry, and at worst will launch one of the two squarely towards top contender status.

UFC 123 shocker: Penn sends Hughes home in 21 seconds

B.J. Penn is far from finished. Lightweight legend disappeared from pound-for-pound top 10 lists after dropping two fights to current UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar. Looks like Edgar is just that good and a terrible matchup for Penn. Against a slower, less dangerous striker in Matt Hughes, Penn looked like a world beater.

Hughes came out looking to strike and got drilled by a counter right. The former welterweight champ fell to his back where he took four blasting rights and a left. Referee Dan Miragliotta stepped in to save Hughes at 0:21 of the first round in the co-main event of UFC 123.

UPDATE: Penn received an $80,000 bonus for knockout of the night.

UPDATE II: Heavy.com reports that Penn will bounce back quickly to fight on Feb. 27 in the main event at UFC 127 in Sydney, Australia.

Seconds after the TKO, a confused Hughes asked his cornermen, "what happened?"

After a few minutes to collect himself, Hughes told UFC analyst Joe Rogan, he didn't know what hit him.

"He hit me hard. When I felt the hit, I thought it was a knee or a kick," Hughes said. "He hit me pretty hard."

Hughes (45-7, 18-6 UFC) has only been stopped via TKO three times in his career. This was by far the fastest knockout he's ever suffered. Hard to believe, but Hughes lost via submission against Dennis Hallman twice, in just 18 and 20 seconds.

Penn, who seemed almost sullen leading up the fight, got his mojo back. He exploded with joy after the fight running from the cage into the crowd. Once he got the microphone, he screamed that he loved Detroit and the UFC. He also told Hughes that he was his idol.

Penn (16-7-1, 13-6-1 UFC) was a dominant force at 155 pounds winning three straight title defenses after grabbing the belt at UFC 80. He was dominated by Georges St. Pierre in a fight at 170 pounds at UFC 94.

After losing to Edgar for a second time, the move back to face the big boys at welterweight seemed like an odd choice. Penn was probably giving away 10-12 pounds tonight, but superior technique and speed usually overcomes size.

After a loss to Thiago Alves back at UFC 85, Hughes seemed incapable of competing at the highest level. With three straight wins, he got his career back on track and was even being mentioned as a title contender.

Following the fight, the 37-year-old veteran said he was unclear of what he would do next.
